Online Ordering-In Store Pick Up

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Thank you to a very smart customer who suggested that we offer online shopping with the option for in store pick up……and now we do……you can now shop at www.gumdropsonline.com and pick up at 2029 West 4th Avenue, Vancouver. Now that is convenience…..As you know as soon as the rain falls the store is an absolute zoo……no matter how well we try to prepare with inventory and staff…..when it rains it pours litterally. Our inventory levels are usually depleted in 1-2 days. Our staff are so busy a bathroom break is often a 6:15pm after thought!!!! and there are boots flying EVERYWHERE……

So now you have the convenience of shopping at home, (in your office, we wont tell) or anywhere for that matter with all the new I-pnones and technology……with a quick and simple pick up in store…. you wont even need to plug the meter. Just pull up to the loading bay, switch your hazard lights on, run like mad, and grab your goodies, and avoid the crowds…….Now that is efficient service with a smile!!!

Partying GumDrops style!

Friday, September 25th, 2009

After weeks of planning  the GumDrops coat launch party finally happened last night!  The coats look fantastic!  The fashion show went off without a hitch–well mostly without a hitch; Liz, the inspiration behind the Trench and one of our models, almost missed her turn in the spotlight.Luckily with a little stalling, Liz was able to strut her stuff on the catwalk!  In fact all the other models–Laura, Hayley and Cassie looked absolutely gorgeous and made the GumDrops raincoats look amazing. Guests enjoyed martinis and nibbles, plus took advantage of the one night discount of 20% off everything in the store and stocked up on boots, coats and umbrellas.

Thanks to all who came to the event and special thanks to the models and all those who helped make our first coat launch party such a success!

Wedding Wellies….whos in?

Monday, September 21st, 2009

I have recently had a few requests for wellies for lovely ladies who are getting married either in the rainy season…or a rainy location and it got me to thinking about a whole other identity to what GumDrops could offer our brides to be not only on the ‘wet’ coast…..but anywhere that may require a shoe horn if wearing inappropriate foot wear on say farm land near Regina, or the sandy sea side of Tofino…….I am wondering what your suggestions would be if you were to require wonderful wedding wellies on your special day…..or even a brollie to protect the do and makeup…….LET US KNOW!!!!

VIFF-GumDrops and Lollipops Window

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Looking out my window right now….’tis a raining……and supposed to all day…..which means that EVERY ONE will be headed to the store….(we all know the rain is coming, but most still wait until it materializes)….which is fine with me but I thought it to be a good day to explain the window display you will all come across when you visit……

The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) sent out a competition release to complete a window display and enter the competition…..so as usual I added yet a another thing to my already heaping plate….why not I have to create a window this month anyways…..no problem!!!

Well as things would have it….the store has been crazy (we have been like Mother Hubbard with a bare cupboard for the past week) and I was at a point on Monday where it was the day before the competition submission deadline with NO IDEA on what to do……so I read the criteria on the letter “A Window on the World” and the promotional poster reading “an Open mind is advised” well…..the latter can take on many imaginative forms….however most probably not suitable for a store that has many wee ones coming to visit!!!! so anything sexual of phallic was agreed to not be appropriate….so ‘A window on the world’ was the other inspirational title…….

Our window on the world….

Looking through rose coloured window panes. A world where there is no war, famine or intolerance. A world where GumDrops and Lollipops definitely make it a sweeter place….how can you go wrong when the world is made of the sweetest thing (and something dear to my heart, or should that be teeth?) SUGAR!!!! and the grass is always green!!!

You can vote for us (preferably) or your favorite VIFF window at www.viff.org

Desperately Seeking Jimmy

Friday, September 11th, 2009

jimmy choo hunterAnyone who is a rainboot aficionado is familiar with Hunter boots. The Scottish based brand has been making wellies for over 150 years. The riding inspired rubber boot has become quite fashionable over the past few years and with a recent collaboration with celebrity shoe designer  Jimmy Choo, the Hunter is definite must have for rainy days.

I have been trying to bring these Jimmy Choo Hunters to GumDrops with no success; they are sold out everywhere but was told they will be available for Spring 2010. So when I talked to Choo’s people they said GumDrops can carry the boot…as long as I  buy 50 pairs of the stilettos!!  Unfortunately the  rainboot store has no use for high heels unless it’s in rubber so  I proposed buying 50 pairs of the Hunters and being the exclusive seller in Vancouver. Still waiting to hear back…..

Rumour has it Hunter is actually making its own knock-off for the spring…will definitely investigate….

Refresher Course Umbrella Etiquette

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Cheeky umbrellaNothing drives me more crazy than inexeperienced and ignorant umbrella drivers!!! I swear there should be a test and I license issued to everyone who wishes to take on the rain with their new ‘weapon’- and yes they are weapons! Many times my eyes have been within millimeters of their lives with the oblivious driver tilting, or walking their tips at eye level not knowing the fragility of my peepers!

Now that the rainy season is upon us, I think it is  time for a little reminder about the rules involved in carrying such an accessory. It is said a Vancouverite has three umbrellas – a good one, a cheap one, and one found on the bus. I love the rain, but I hate umbrellas, and I’ve always just had crappy ones, that I then leave on the bus and have to get off two stops early to buy another cheap one. This year, I was prepared and bought 2 straight off the bat, last week, before it even started raining. They did not come with instructions, as I seriously think they should have.

The reason being is that people do not know how to deal with umbrellas. Yes they are a nuisance, particularly when you’re trying to carry your gym bag, laptop bag, and coffee cup in a delicate balance that is entirely thrown off by the addition of an umbrella, but it rains a lot here and so they are here to stay.

Candy Spot Bubble

First off, you do not need one of those giant golf umbrellas that will hold 3 people as well as all their golf equipment under them. Those are for golfing, not the city. I recently had the misfortune to be walking behind someone with one of those behemoths and everyone on the corner had to shield their eyes.

Secondly, watch out for people’s eyes! There are a lot of sharp, pointy bits on these things and they are not to be swung around all willy-nilly.

Next, I have to say that it particularly annoys me when people have their umbrellas open and then walk under the awnings. Personally I think all businesses in Vancouver should be mandated to have an awning of a certain size, to protect the passers-by, but that is another story. If you have an umbrella, then walk in the rain or put it down. No need for the hood-wearers to be forced coldly (and wetly) out into the street.

I’ve seen various methods of how people avoid umbrella to umbrella contact outside. They walk around if they are nice or run straight through if they are rude, leading to a brushing of their rain umbrellas. It is already bad enough the weather is poor, no one needs to get hit by an umbrella. The proper action to take depends on your height. You can avoid running around a crowd if you size up how tall you are compared to the other people. This means if you are generally taller than them, stretch your arm up and raise it above to avoid contact. If you are shorter, take a few hits of rain and drop it to your left or right depending on which side you are passing. This will ensure no one gets hit and you don’t have to travel out of your path during these inconvenient situations!

Once you reach your destination your umbrella will most likely be soaked and dripping from the elements. There are options when you go inside, such as shaking off the excess water to dry it off or lay it down. What’s the best option? Before entering the indoors, give a few strong shakes to ward off the extra water and hold it to your side. You don’t want to put it in your bag yet, it will soak everything. If you are sitting down, place your umbrella on the ground near your feet. I’ve seen some people put it on a seat or right on the table. No one likes to sit in a wet seat, so don’t ruin it for people who will sit in your spot after you leave. Laying it on a table will work if you make sure to wipe up the water afterward…don’t be lazy with rain umbrellas!

Here are a few more tips….

1.Never open  your umbrella indoors. (unless you’re at GumDrops, where all umbrella opening is immune to bad luck!)

2. The taller person should always raise their umbrella when passing in tight quarters.

3. Never open your umbrella at sporting events.

4. If your umbrella has blown inside out more than six times, replace it.

5. Be very cautious when changing direction with an open umbrella, accidents happen!

I would love to hear other pet peeves, stories or tips on umbrella etiquette…so GumDrops followers let me know!

Party Planning

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Now that the shop is finally reopened and looking absolutely fabulous, my next project is planning a coat launch party! I am in the process of designing and manufacturing a collection of raincoats. I thought who better to take on the challenge  than someone with no design experience whatsoever…heck I opened a store not knowing what I was doing, how hard could coats be? (once again I was dealt a large dose of reality….why is everything so difficult? hmmm that’s for a future blog post)

Anyway, back to the party. It will be on Wednesday, September 23 at 7pm. There will be cocktails and appetizers plus a mini fashion show presenting the two styles for fall. I can’t wait to show off  the source of a lot of hair pulling and losing it one too many times. If anyone is interested in being one of the first to see the first GumDrops collection of rainwear, come to the launch! Now I just need the coats to be ready….wish me luck!
