Hilary Duff in Jimmy Choo For Hunter

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

I just have to say it is an absolutely perfect day to write my blog post…the skies are gray and leaking A LOT of moisture on this very rainy Saturday…..All I can think about is which boots I am going to splash with today!!!….Any hoo back to the blog.

Goody GumDrops (that’s us)…..some fond and frequent peeps have affectionately titled us as the Rain Boot Mecca of Vancouver, others are opposing it….why you ask? Well, the trouble is  we are a small independent retailer and don’t have the same, influence or persuasive pull as other larger chains like H&M or Aritzia…..SHOCKING!!! I know!!!

SO, as many of you walked up 4th and popped in to see if we had what Vogue called “the most luxurious Wellington Boots around” the Jimmy Choo for Hunter, and were regretfully told “No, we don’t have it, nor can we order it, nor can we assist you in any way for a special request”. I am sincerely sorry. It was as much of a frustrating quest for you as it was for us!!! I left like I was trying to find a tiny little leprechaun, and when I did it; it was all a smoke and mirrors!!!

But alas my frustration has subsided (and hopefully yours too)…..Hunter has created their own version of the Jimmy….The Hunter Carnaby Boa….for Spring 2010, seasonal showers have never looked so good!!! I just had my pair put on hold and am super excited to pick them up tomorrow. WOO WOO!!! (and yes I just ripped off Arsenio Hall)

In addition to the Carnaby Hunter has gone to town with vibrant colour and ultimate sexiness….Just arrived last night the Hunter Gloss Short in Black, Graphite and Turquoise (I will be grabbing my pair of the Tall Turquoise when they arrive)

Wondering who has donned the ever stylish Jimmy’s??? Celebs from fashion icon Kate Moss, Rachel Bilson, Liz Hurley and Hilary Duff (Below)

How oh How are my Little Boots Made?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Many people ask the question how are rain boots made???……while not all boots go through the exact same process many of them are actually made by hand…..which, when you think about how many feet are being kept dry by cutie petutie boots it boggles the mind to think how many hands go into making that one pair of boots…and that its not just machines!!!!

I thought it was pretty cool since it really is a craft to skillfully complete 1 pair of boots….a sample is shown below…..but to see the cool complete process click here

Bor Sang, Thailand Umbrella Festival

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Upon my travels over Christmas and the New Year I kept my eyes open for unusual and unique products…..while in the Bangkok airport trying to waste a few hours until my delayed plane arrived I read about the Bor Sang Umbrella Festival in Thailand which not only got me intrigued about the people (huge smiles all the time), culture and lifestyle but also the products and how to bring them into Canada and specifically GumDrops. I think these would be perfect additons to our range for the spring showers and summer sun. If you’d like to see these beautiful pieces added to the selection at GumDrops shoot us a comment or email me at goody@gumdropsonline.com.

The History:

For more than 100 years, the village has been associated with the production of umbrellas made from saa paper derived from mulberry tree bark. According to local history, a monk travelled to neighbouring Myanmar, where he came across saa paper umbrellas that offered protection against both the sun and rain.
He returned with the production technique and introduced the umbrella to the elders of Bor Sang village, who added their own artistic skills to create a distinctive colourful, but very practical, umbrella. At first it was just a profitable hobby that supplemented the villagers’ earnings from the annual rice crop. However, with time production of the saa paper umbrellas prospered, prompting villagers to establish a handicraft cooperative in 1941 that now organises the annual festival.
Using silk and cotton, weaved at neighbouring San Kamphaeng, villagers eventually added a second line of umbrellas decorated with images of the north, its flowers and birds, all intricately hand-painted. Today, Bor Sang village exports both saa paper and silk umbrellas. They are seen at trade shows in a variety of sizes, from giant parasols that offer a shady canopy from the sun, to miniscule variations that adorn popular cocktail drinks.
To celebrate its success, the village hosts a three-day festival every January. Streets are illuminated by lanterns, while hundreds of umbrellas are hung from the rafters and beams of houses and shops. Bands play, and villagers compete to design the year’s most attractive umbrella. Concerts, a food festival and beauty contest all compete for the attention of the audience, a mix of both tourists and residents, who gather here to celebrate Bor Sang’s innovative handicraft skills.
Throughout the year, tourists visit the village, a short 6 km drive from Chiang Mai, to buy umbrellas and study the process and skills that go into making a handicraft entirely from natural products. But nothing quite compares with the buzz that permeates the village during this colourful three-day handicraft festival, every January. It is a scene that represents village hospitality and charm at its very best.
The Bor Sang Umbrella and San Kamphaeng Handicraft Festival takes place from January 16-18 2010Bor-Sang Umbrella Festival, Thailand.
