Fall Into Rain Boot Fashion

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Another sunny season has passed, and the “dreadful” rain is creeping up. I say “dreadful” because I am speaking on behalf of the last bit of you Vancouverites and other Raincity dwellers who still do not have H to T rain gear. For shame! Being a picky shopaholic myself, the only excuse I could come up with as acceptable was: I still haven’t found the right pair.

Well, some what acceptable. Better than the dog keeps eating mine (are you rubbing peanut butter on them??)

Anyways, with this glorious sunshine I doubt this mysterious breed of non-wellie owning people are even thinking about the slippery slopes that lay ahead. Lucky for them, I am always thinking how to improve my rain boot closet as well as yours. So here are just a few of my favorite styles this fall! Click here to shop and browse more of my fav styles.

The Bog Mckenna $250

The Bog Mckenna, retails for $250. A little steep for a rain boot, right? WRONG. So wrong. The Bog Mckenna is made from a treated leather, which covers their infamous neo-tech upper. In English, they are leather boots that are water proof AND cold temperature rated. In Kathryn-talk: Pure boot glory! So when your husband, or judgmental friend, asks “How could you spend that much on a rain boot?!” Its simple math my friends. 1 pair @$250 – 1 pair of rain boots – 1 pair of leather boots = More shopping money & more room in your closet. Or maybe another pair in brown?

Mel By Melissa Lace Ankle Boot $65

Alright, if you’re scoffing my above attempt to convince you, or are still suffering from price shock: Breathe. I’ll take it down a notch or two (hundred) for you newbies and pinchers. Lace has been a new addition to our wardrobes for the past year, so it’s no exclusion to the rain world. This delicate detail is perfect for the women who still rock a frock in the fall. Eco-friendly, recyclable, cruelty-free, and 100% of materials used during production makes this a steal at only $65. A trendy steal!

DAV Festival Leopard $59

Finally, I have a bit of a tease because these are going to be hard to get! Sorry.. But how can I not feature these? It’s rain boot magic. They feel like your favorite knit scarf, they look like the trendiest leopard sweater in your favorite boutique, Oh- but they keep your feet dry! Yup, no big deal. I don’t really understand this wizardry, but I like it. This knit-feel rain boot can be worn slouchy, up high and proud, with skinnies, or with a skirt. Are you one of the lucky travelers of the world? Roll em up and take them with you. Doesn’t even have to be raining. There is always time to show your wild side. Maybe you aren’t so wild.. That’s okay, they are available in a black snake pattern as well.

I really could go off about why I love each pair of our rain boots. But you’ve probably already stopped reading this and are swooping our store. Come babies, we will keep you dry from the rain!

Flower Power

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Looking out onto the Vancouver weather I know and love (rain) this month’s window display has turned out to be a slight oxy moron.. Falling into the inevitable trap of believing that “it never rains in the summer”, I let the summer and all its activities inspire me.

Deciding that we had too many adorable products in store that have yet to be displayed, a garden party theme was in order. After hours of tissue paper flower craft time, to which I have discovered I have bear paws when it comes to anything delicate, I have grown my own paper garden right in the window.

Come to think of it, maybe the display is the perfect way to help transition from flip flops to rain drops?

My Top 6 Rainy Movie Scenes

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

With the next week forecasted for rain (at least here in Vancouver) I though it only appropriate to share my top 6 rainy movies scenes. Why 6? Because I couldn’t chose between The Notebook or Spiderman!

6.) Spiderman (2002)
The Spiderman scene where MJ (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) have the mind blowing kiss (where Spiderman is hanging upside down) looks pretty amazing on film…but in all actuality it isn’t that “hot” in real life. In fact its really awkward and unless he is really hanging from a building in a Spiderman outfit then all the magic is gone. However, the scene is hot and undoubtedly the best part of the movie (after all it did win Best Kiss at the years MTV movie awards haha) and is definitely a memorable one!

5.) Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
The last 5 minutes of Breakfast at Tiffany’s are by far the best. As Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) searches the dirty New York Streets for Cat, in her cute raincoat and flats, you can see the desperation that is oozing out of her. But it is when the rain is pouring down and the silhouette of Paul Varjak (George Peppard) holding Cat appears does your heart melt. And lets not forget the swoon worthy kiss at the end. Meow!

4.) Forest Gump (1994)
Everyone always remembers that “life is like a box of chocolates,” but I bet you everyone also left the theater after seeing this remembering the different types of shrimp and types of rainstorms there are. When Forrest (Tom Hanks) is fighting in Vietnam, he narrates, “One day it started raining, and it didn’t quit for four months. We been through every kind of rain there is. Little bitty stingin’ rain … and big ol’ fat rain. Rain that flew in sideways. And sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath. And then one day it just stopped.” This scene is one of my favorite because it gives insight into the war but in a humorous “forest” kind of way.

3.) Lord of the Rings (2002)
The battle for Helm’s Deep during the second of Peter Jackson’s movie adaptation of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy was the best combat scene from the entire thing. The whole amazing war happened while sheets of rain fell from the sky. You would think a fight scene would be hard to follow during a rain sequence, but not here. Everything is well choreographed and the action is top-notch adding more depth to an already epic battle sequence.

2.) The Notebook (2004)
I had a hard time deciding between Spiderman or The Notebook for best rainy kiss in a movie, so i decided its a tie to to add both. I don’t think I need to go into detail about this steaming scene because really who hasn’t seen the notebook? So i thought instead I would quote my favorite line instead…(please imagine this in a southern accent :) )

Ali: Why didn’t You write me? Why? It wasn’t over for me. I waited for you for 7 years and now its too late!

Noah: I wrote you. I wrote you every day for a year. It wasn’t over…It still isn’t over…cue make out session.

1.) Singing in the Rain (1952)
Come on, you saw this coming. It even has the word rain in the title. Who can forget Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) incredible dance number in the rain? Don just says goodnight to Kathy Seldon (Debbie Reynolds) after a great evening. He is so happy at the turn of events that he feels he must sing about it while it is raining. He swings on lampposts, jumps in puddles, and twirls an umbrella the whole time. He never seems to mind that he is soaking wet. The most famous rain scene in movie history was done in just one take and Kelly also improvised most of his dance moves.

I’d love to know what your top 5 are…….and why…..

Love her, Show her – Mothers Day May 9th

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

A few years ago I was living in London, working in the hospitality industry….which I am sure needs no introduction into how long the work days were….one Sunday afternoon on my walk home from my 1/2 day of 8 hours, I noticed that Hallmark was telling my mommy she is loved….and I should tell her too. With a hint of guilt I quickly purchased my card, wrote on the inside, licked the envelope (can’t they at least make it taste like strawberries) and posted my love to my mom…..triumphant in the knowledge that it would be there in time for Mothers day in 2 weeks!!! What a thoughtful daughter I was!!!

Time went on and I hadn’t heard a peep from my mom…Mothers Day had come and passed (No, I am not an awful child for not calling her.  The time difference and my work schedule conflicted consistently). So on my next available Sunday afternoon I called my mom to see if she got the card…and that she did…but there was a nervous undertone in her voice….”It was a lovely thought honey….but it isn’t mothers day here in Australia for another 2 months….so I’ll just keep it until then”.

I was so proud of myself….thought I had done the nicest thing ever and my mom is looking at the card like “a swing and a miss. We’ll just swing again in 2 months”.

After this mistake I realised I didn’t want it to be just ONE day that I take a moment to tell my mom how special she  is….IT SHOULD BE 2 one in March & one in May!!!

Joking aside, show her often, tell her frequently….

So to my Mom, a Happy Mothers Day, today and every day. I love you!!!

And for those of you who need a little reminder for that special day this is for you…..

Perfect Spring MUST HAVE? Hunter Wellies!!!

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Yes, yes we all know the saying April showers bring May flowers…but it also brings a chance to get this springs MUST HAVE!!!

While most people spend their time and energy denying that it’s rainy season again….they forget to think that a practical pair of wellies could be the solution to all their soggy problems!!! We all know that keeping feet dry during the month of April can become a full-time occupation or extreme sport while dodging those pesky puddles!!!

One fashion column has found the solution to all your problems and say, Hunter wellies are THE boots to wear when it is raining.
“As it’s welly-boot weather again, keep your feet snug and dry with the latest addition to the Hunter boot range of ultra gloss wellies now available in black, turquoise, violet, citrine or graphite,” the Press and Journal advises.

Hunter wellies should be teamed up with a pair of fleece welly-boot liners for extra warmth, the article adds.

Why not joing the growing list of celebrites who wear them fashionably proud….like Alice in Wonderlands, Anne Hathaway (its not even raining either….she must LOVE her boots)

Nubrella to the rescue. It reinvents the umbrella into an aerodynamic sphere, protecting you from the rain and guaranteed never to get blown out, or as they call it, “invert.” read more…….

Hilary Duff in Jimmy Choo For Hunter

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

I just have to say it is an absolutely perfect day to write my blog post…the skies are gray and leaking A LOT of moisture on this very rainy Saturday…..All I can think about is which boots I am going to splash with today!!!….Any hoo back to the blog.

Goody GumDrops (that’s us)…..some fond and frequent peeps have affectionately titled us as the Rain Boot Mecca of Vancouver, others are opposing it….why you ask? Well, the trouble is  we are a small independent retailer and don’t have the same, influence or persuasive pull as other larger chains like H&M or Aritzia…..SHOCKING!!! I know!!!

SO, as many of you walked up 4th and popped in to see if we had what Vogue called “the most luxurious Wellington Boots around” the Jimmy Choo for Hunter, and were regretfully told “No, we don’t have it, nor can we order it, nor can we assist you in any way for a special request”. I am sincerely sorry. It was as much of a frustrating quest for you as it was for us!!! I left like I was trying to find a tiny little leprechaun, and when I did it; it was all a smoke and mirrors!!!

But alas my frustration has subsided (and hopefully yours too)…..Hunter has created their own version of the Jimmy….The Hunter Carnaby Boa….for Spring 2010, seasonal showers have never looked so good!!! I just had my pair put on hold and am super excited to pick them up tomorrow. WOO WOO!!! (and yes I just ripped off Arsenio Hall)

In addition to the Carnaby Hunter has gone to town with vibrant colour and ultimate sexiness….Just arrived last night the Hunter Gloss Short in Black, Graphite and Turquoise (I will be grabbing my pair of the Tall Turquoise when they arrive)

Wondering who has donned the ever stylish Jimmy’s??? Celebs from fashion icon Kate Moss, Rachel Bilson, Liz Hurley and Hilary Duff (Below)
