VIFF-GumDrops and Lollipops Window

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Looking out my window right now….’tis a raining……and supposed to all day…..which means that EVERY ONE will be headed to the store….(we all know the rain is coming, but most still wait until it materializes)….which is fine with me but I thought it to be a good day to explain the window display you will all come across when you visit……

The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) sent out a competition release to complete a window display and enter the competition…..so as usual I added yet a another thing to my already heaping plate….why not I have to create a window this month anyways…..no problem!!!

Well as things would have it….the store has been crazy (we have been like Mother Hubbard with a bare cupboard for the past week) and I was at a point on Monday where it was the day before the competition submission deadline with NO IDEA on what to do……so I read the criteria on the letter “A Window on the World” and the promotional poster reading “an Open mind is advised” well…..the latter can take on many imaginative forms….however most probably not suitable for a store that has many wee ones coming to visit!!!! so anything sexual of phallic was agreed to not be appropriate….so ‘A window on the world’ was the other inspirational title…….

Our window on the world….

Looking through rose coloured window panes. A world where there is no war, famine or intolerance. A world where GumDrops and Lollipops definitely make it a sweeter place….how can you go wrong when the world is made of the sweetest thing (and something dear to my heart, or should that be teeth?) SUGAR!!!! and the grass is always green!!!

The End of Summer…

Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

The Pacific National Exhibition starts today at Hastings Park. Locals know you can count on there being rain during the PNE; it’s a Vancouver tradition! Luckily I am prepared for a wet soggy day at the fair with my blue floral Joules wellies and a hot pink Ilse Jacobsen slicker. There is so much to see and do at the PNE; my personal favorites are riding the roller coaster and eating way too many mini donuts!

Grass is Always Greener…..Most of the Time!!!

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Barely dressed, no shoes,  sweat coating my chair; I sit in the oven that is my office and realize I am experiencing my first official Vancouver heat wave! For a moment I become nostalgic for my native Australia, but quickly remember how I hate extreme heat! (it’s part of the reason I moved to BC) It sucks lacking energy, having a constant film of perspiration covering my body, and using a feeble fan that is just no match for the scorching temperature.

Like the rest of the city I am completely ill-prepared for the 35-plus degree weather and am happy to complain to anyone who will listen. Actually Vancouverites are never happy with the weather: when it rains we want the sun; if it’s sunny  and hot we want the rain. It’s like the grass is always greener on the other side until we reach it and decide  it’s not so great.  And the grass is definitely not greener during this drought; it is brown and crunchy! All the lawns around town are in desperate need of moisture, but because of water restrictions, I discovered a  great alternative; grass painting! Why bother trying to revive your dead yellow grass when you can just spray paint it a lush emerald green? Or perhaps a chartreuse is more to your liking! Hell lets make it a Hunter green to match my boots!!!

Does Anyone Know the Definition of Irony?

We sure do!!!!

One Sunday morning in September last year I opened the store to what I thought was a bad joke (someone flooding the ‘rain wear store’) but it actually turned out to be the building’s hot water system and pipes, flushing its contents through the ceiling, down the walls and pipes and onto our beautiful turquoise hardwood floors! To my surprise all our inventory was unscathed by the whole incident!!!! Needless to say I was thinking of replacing the buckets to catch the water with a few pairs of Gumboots.

It has now been 10 months, the insurance red tape has been sorted, and now it’s time to repair the damage. We will be closing our doors Sunday July 26th, 2009 and re-opening sometime mid-August (we can’t set a concrete date as we are at the mercy of the contractors…and we all
know the story there) So, as soon as we know a re-opening date….we will let you know. Until then enjoy the rest of your Summer….and we’ll see you for all your back to school needs.

If you need a GumDrops fix in the meantime please visit our website at: www.gumdropsonline.com and all lower mainland customers who order online and use coupon code localfreeship will get local free shipping. So if you know of anyone who can’t or doesn’t get to  Kitsilano often please let them know FREE SHIPPING is available until  we re-open.

We will be blogging, tweeting, and yes face booking the fun and frustrating adventure of repairs, renovations and contractors……stay tuned……

GumDrops Private Label Rain Coats

GumDrops Private Label Rain Coats

As a few people know we had planned on launching our Private Label Rain Coat line in the spring….and as life would have it, we didn’t get to launch….so Fall 09 here we come!!!

With our first boutique sized production run of 15 rain coats hot off the press, my Monday morning began with the ability to actually see and feel our very own brand of VANCOUVER MADE rain coats. (I know Summer just started but I secretly hoped for just a sprinkle even for 10 min so that I could test out these bad boys.)  Now I need to get the word out. So I gathered the troops: Deena-Store Manager & Marketing, Laura-Project Manager, Heather-Coat Designer, Liz-Market Navigators and
Shanda (Me)-Owner, for a brain storming session on how to spread the news about our Breathable, Seam Sealed, Waterproof and yes, Fashionable Rain Coats!

As you can see from the pics our fun has begun with an awesome group of people who I appreciate greatly and thank them for coming aboard the sometimes bumpy, never grumpy GumDrops bus…….enjoy the journey……stay tuned for details about the fabulous launch party in September! (not too sure how to carry off the flip flop & trench coat look)

PS: you may follow our journey from concept to completion with our
tweets, blog, facebook fanpage, and e-newsletters. We’d love to hear
from you too……
